Barnsley LMC is the professional body, recognised in statute through the Health and Social Care Act (2012), and other national regulations, representing and advising Barnsley GP’s and their Practices.
LMC’s operate as the link between local GPs and their national negotiating body, the General Practitioners Committee (GPC). The GPC is an established and permanent Committee of the British Medical Association (BMA). The GPC is directly accountable to policy decisions determined at the LMC Annual Conference. This is the main policy-making event where representatives from LMCs nationally, debate motions which reflect local GP concerns and objectives.
LMCs engage in regular discussions with Integrated Care Boards, (formerly CCGs), Acute Trusts, NHSE/I, Local Authorities and other local Professional Bodies regarding policy and strategic decisions affecting General Practice. LMCs actively support all GPs, regardless of their employment status, helping to deal with a whole host of individual and Practice issues.
Barnsley LMC is ideally constituted of 12 elected members, including 5 executive members, a salaried GP, GP Registrar and is supported by a small secretariat.
